Better Man in a Month Day 9 – Don’t swear for a day

Swearing is one of those things we heard on tv or at the movies when we were kids, or we’d occasionally hear adults or even naughty kids do it. We all looked forward to the day we were old enough and we could do it too, thinking it would make us cooler and more tough. Unfortunately, there is really nothing that great about swearing. Sure, it can be good to do when you kick your toe or run into something just to get that bit of anger off your chest, but the way it is used today is just too much. People swear mid sentence, they use it as an emphasis, hell I’ve even heard it take the place of a comma on occasions. The fact is, however, in any but the most casual settings, swearing is frowned upon, and it should be. Today’s challenge is to go for 24 hours without uttering a swear word. Continue reading

Saturday night drinks – cocktails

Photo: Nick Frey

Heading out on the town tonight and don’t feel like drinking your usual beverage? Wondering if there’s something different out there that can really wet your whistle? Today we’re going to go through some classic cocktails to liven up your night but more importantly your taste buds! Old school cocktails are rarely ordered nowadays with so much else to choose from on the market, but even with all the newer cocktails out there the older ones don’t get the credit they deserve. Up until about 30 years ago there really wasn’t much to choose from when you hit the town for a night out. Sure, there was beer (and a very limited variety at that), but wine came in a cardboard box unless you were wealthy and knew what you were looking for, lollipop drinks (which a bloke shouldn’t be seen drinking anyway) were almost 2 decades away, apart from that it was spirits. So if you wanted something nice besides beer, it was a cocktail. Now, the old cocktails are very different from today’s 10 ingredient monstrosities which have so many sweet ingredients in them to make it easy to mask a ridiculous amount of alcohol, in order to help you get wasted quickly. When you think of old cocktails they are generally 2, maybe 3 ingredients; taking 2-3 ingredients, mixing them with ice and making them palatable is a very subtle art. Let’s take a look at a few. Signs you’re a douchebag

We’ve all seen them – guys that are so in love with themselves and their image that the only person that doesn’t realise they carry on like a prat is them. Now, it’s not in the nature of this site to be judgmental about how people live their lives – people are free to do what they want as far as I’m concerned as long as they aren’t hurting anyone else. However, considering we get ahead in our careers and life in general not only by our own hard work but by the good grace of others, it probably pays not to be seen as a douchebag by everyone around you. Below are some telltale signs that make up our typical modern douchebag. If you are more than a couple of these things, time to take a look in the mirror buddy because you aren’t doing yourself, or masculinity in general any favours by acting the way you do. Lest we forget

We are getting close to the end of April, which means once again Anzac day is just around the corner. For those of you reading this page that don’t live in Australia, Anzac stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and Anzac day began to commemorate those that fought in World War I. It now encompasses all conflicts we have fought in and is a day of commemoration of those that have given their lives and continue to serve this country in the military services. The reason I am writing about Anzac day is to hopefully correct a problem that I have seen for many years in regards to Anzac day for those that don’t serve in the military – drinking. Gentlemanly behaviour for the modern man

Today I had an article of another online publication pointed out to me that was about gentlemanly gestures. While its heart was in the right place, it was somewhat archaic and did not make much sense for the modern man. Things like walking on the street side of the woman you are with really doesn’t apply today, likewise holding the umbrella for both of you (considering these days we have small umbrellas) just doesn’t really qualify as gentlemanly behaviour. So, after speaking with a number of women I know as well as a few guys, here is a list of gentlemanly behaviours for the modern man. Continue reading

Young men and hook up culture

Photo: New York Times

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend recently, both among friends, guys I’m merely acquainted with and stuff I see and hear in the media. The so called “hook up culture” that has become prolific in the last decade seems to have changed men (I’m not going to get into women here) and the way they view relationships in a profound and unhealthy manner. There is no doubt Western society is becoming more sexualised by the minute, now it seems it is changing the very culture of relationships thanks to shows like Sex and the City, Jersey Shores, Keys to the VIP and so on. Getting the best wedding possible

It’s supposed to be the day every woman dreams of since she was a little girl. The day she dons a beautiful dress and is the complete and utter centre of attention, a day she will remember for the rest of her life. So the question must be asked: where is the man’s place in all of this? Continue reading
